TOUR DESCRIPTION – PISA AND FLORENCE
Pisa is known worldwide for its Leaning Tower (the bell tower of the city’s cathedral) built between 1173 and 1350. The tower, which was built on alluvial land, leans to the south-east and is at present 530′ off the vertical. When the foundations were found to be sinking during the construction of the tour the upper section, from the 3rd and 5th floor upwards, was given a tilt towards the north. Galileo, born in Pisa, made use of the inclination of the tower in his experiments on the law of gravity.
The best-known site and crowning architectural jewel of Florence is the domed cathedral of the city, Santa Maria del Fiore, known as “The Duomo”. The magnificent dome was built by Filippo Brunelleschi. The nearby Campanile tower (partly designed by Giotto) and the Baptistery buildings are also highlights. At the heart of the city in Piazza della Signoria is Fountain of Neptune, which is a masterpiece of marble sculpture at the terminus of a still functioning Roman aqueduct. The Uffizi Gallery is one of the greatest in the world, with some 4500 picture. In addition to the Uffizi, Florence has other world-class museums, one of them, the Accademia dell’Arte Gallery collection’s highlight is Michelangelo’s David. One of the bridges over the Arno.River in particular stands out as being unique . the ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge),whose most striking feature Is the multitude of shops bulit upon its edges, held up bystilts.
